The Grand Challenge
Claudia Booker is a home birth Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) who serves the birth communities of the Washington DC, Maryland, and northern Virginia areas. For the last ten years her birthing services company, Birthing Hands of DC, (www.BirthingHandsDC.com) has provided a full range of pre-natal, birth, (including birth doula and midwife birth assistant services) and post-partum support, and educational outreach services to pregnant persons, their families and the local birthing community. In 2005 she began one of the first community-based doula programs in the country at the DC Family Health and Birth Center. On May 5, 2012, Claudia, in co-authorship with Ayesha Ibrahim and Jennie Joseph, presented “Saving our Babies, Mother and Families Then and Now; A Pictorial History of African-American Midwifery in the USA, 1600’s – Present” at the world-wide Virtual International Day of the Midwife; it has been presented at other venues since then. A further exploration of a related topic, on May 5, 2014, Claudia, in co-authorship with Ayesha Ibrahim, presented “The Grand Challenge: Matching Scholars to Scholarships to Reduce Disparities in Birth Outcomes” at the 2014 world-wide Virtual International Day of the Midwife. Claudia is an active member of International Center for Traditional Childbearing (ICTC), DONA, La Leche League International, CAPPA, DC Breastfeeding Coalition, and Mocha Moms of Washington, DC. Claudia is also the recipient of the American Association of Birth Center 2006 Community Service Award and of the ICTC 2010 National Leadership Award.
